What is World Trail Measures?
The following is an excerpt from a World Trail Majors press release:
World Trail MajorsBirth - A trail running and ultramarathon framework that embodies diversity, respect, sustainability and independence.
Today, November 13, 2023, we are pleased to announce the launch of the World Trail Majors, a framework for trail running and ultramarathon events that embodies the values of diversity, respect, sustainability, and independence. The framework brings together great races and race organizers from around the world to leverage their local knowledge and put communities at the heart of their work to deliver a new global racing experience.
Trail running and ultramarathon racing have undergone a complex and sometimes unpredictable evolution. To guide the sport's evolution in the right direction, several race organizers have drawn on decades of knowledge and experience to form a framework that preserves the original spirit of trail running and ultramarathon racing.
The fundamentals of this World Trail Majors competition are solid and simple.
- DiversityThis refers to embracing the diverse aspects of trail running and further enhancing the sport as a cultural and social activity. Trail running and ultramarathons are incredibly diverse and varied sports. Each race is unique, varying in distance and terrain, offering athletes an endless variety of experiences. Diversity is one of the core values of trail running and must be cherished.
- RespectThis means caring for the environment of the race location and having the desire to improve it. The scenery of the race location where you will be participating has existed since before the birth of this sport. Respect the natural environment and local customs. It is important to strive to ensure that trail running activities, the local community, and the environment improve together. Activities in nature must always respect and treat the natural environment with care. Please keep in mind that our activities have an impact not only on sport but also on the local community and the world as a whole.
- identityThis means that each race will be inspired by its local environment and the stories that have been nurtured there, developing a unique and vibrant personality that will create a lasting legacy for the athletes, race officials and local communities, making each race an unforgettable and incredible sporting experience.
The World Trail Majors is not primarily intended to solve the challenges of a rapidly evolving sport, but rather is a framework created to provide inspiration to all runners and event organizers and to point the way to new developments.
Unlike other sports, trail running and ultramarathons can be enjoyed in natural outdoor environments with simple rules. Athletes are not bound by complex rules and can freely experience running in nature. Under the World Trail Majors framework, we aim to preserve the true value of this sport while maintaining an open and accessible atmosphere for everyone. We involve local organizations, value local communities, and invigorate local economies. It is important that the races themselves are run in a way that does not impact the natural environment, but the events should also provide athletes with wonderful memories that will stay with them for a lifetime. The World Trail Majors will be an open event for the first time in 2024, with the following events scheduled:
